San Jacinto Plaza Grand Opening But How Much Did It Cost?

@DWNTWNElPaso tweeted out on April first that the San Jacinto Plaza Grand Opening will be on Saturday, April 16th from 10am – 7pm.  According to KFOX, this isn’t an April fools joke:  “City officials said a press conference is scheduled for Wednesday to announce more details about the event.”

Now, the question is, how much did tax payers pay for this renovation?  In October 2015, the City Council asked El Paso City Attorney Sylvia Borunda-Firth and the contractor, Basic IDIQ, to start figuring out how much money the contractor renovating San Jacinto Plaza owed the city.  If you’ll recall, the City was charging the contractor $1000 a day since May because the project was so late.  However, we never heard what, if anything, was actually going to be paid back.  All we have is this little quote from a KVIA special report in November of 2015:  “The city said the project is still within the budget, but a final tally will come after discussions with the contractor once major work is complete.”

  1. You can tear down City Hall in a heartbeat. You can purchase a part of the local newspaper’s offices like nothing. You can build a modern baseball park in very short order. You can do all kinds of things, but you can’t construct an outdoor plaza, or fix city streets worth a damn. El Paso, you have some serious problems.
