I-10 Closure Moved to Saturday Because New Mexico Wants it That Way

Originally, I-1o was going to be closed this coming Sunday.  However, at the request of the NEW MEXICO Governor, the closure will be Saturday, March 19, from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m., instead of Sunday, on  I-10 between Sunland Park Drive and Executive Center Boulevard.  According to KVIA, the closures will be:

– Eastbound and westbound lanes I-10 from Sunland Park Drive and Executive Center Boulevard

– Paisano Drive at Executive Boulevard and Sunland Park Drive and Paisano Drive

– Crockett Street between Sunland Park Drive and Paisano Drive

According to the El Paso Times, “The planned closure of Interstate 10 in West El Paso set for Sunday has been moved to Saturday as a favor to New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez in order to help Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.”  The Sunland Park Casino has been having a difficult time with the equine herpes virus outbreak earlier this year which resulted in them losing 19 racing days.  However, was this everyone trying to help the Casino or was it for another reason? “Campaign-finance disclosures show that since 2011, Martinez (the New Mexico Governor) has been the recipient of $30,400 in campaign contributions from Stanley Fulton, CEO of Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.”  That reads to us like the Governor of New Mexico got a campaign donation from Sunland Park and was trying to return the favor at the expense of the El Paso citizens.
